A moment of reflection

(( Do not let the will play gardener to your soul Unless you are sure It is wiser than your soul’s nature. // E. L. Masters ))

He had given us life so long before we set foot here. He carefully sifted for us by dint of love and wisdom the finest and most qualified of men among us and named them prophets and gave each a shared mission to awaken us and patiently teach us wisdom and good life lessons and sustainably help us all the way in order to get ready to sit for an exam they had already sat for and succeeded in and got rewarded for eternally.

We must never forget that God has endowed our bodies, hearts and souls with life and bestowed strength to us so that we resist human ignorance, hateful weakness and cheap living but also and more importantly so that we insist on learning more and continue to love life more, hate the enemies of it well and forgive those who do not know as we move on. God alone is pulling the sky over our heads with no need of pillars as we see it. He then offered us the earth and beautified it and ordered it to serve us with many a tree, flower and fruit, to name but few, hence making it, observe the seasons and cycles of nature, look like a vivid carpet on which we walk, work and explore. To give but one example of God's creation, let us not fail to observe the cycles of life of a butterfly. There is in them a great secret waiting for us to fathom. Good life long learners are going to blush with a feeling of eternal indebtedness. In the meantime, what have we done to ourselves?

Human beings, save a few among us but perhaps away from what we say and do, are sneering, mocking and looking down on one another. Horrendous atrocities and crimes are being inflicted on God's creation. If they are hidden and forgotten, they are written. How faulty, ignorant and deprived then are those of us who do not perceive. How impoverished and wretched are those who do not seek strength and wealth from the One who created them with His own Hands and gave them health and life when others are giving sickness and death. How dangerous and hurtful to their own selves are those who do not remember. If memory serves only those who forget, what do ignorance, refusal to learn and oblivion serve?

The Ayah/Verse 61 from Surat/Chapter of The Bees has it that:

If Allāh were to punish people ‘immediately’ for their wrongdoing, He would not have left a single living being on earth. But He delays them for an appointed term. And when their time arrives, they cannot delay it for a moment nor could they advance it.

A Moment Of Awareness

Is it ethically obtainable for us or for others to continue to believe those who have practiced on us or on them the business of lying, swindling, deception, manipulation and procrastination even for one single time? As far as I can see it, this is extremely difficult and goes beyond the fickle and poorly-acquired human opinion twisted by the conditions and state of affairs which are already affected by the cycles of time and the winds of change.

The way out of that requires a great deal of effort and should go toward wiping each one them out from our memory. Such a decisive move should be directed towards that end alone and we must never honor anyone of them, and hence ward off insulting ourselves, by the erroneous willingness to invest time and effort in waiting for them to change. We must never accord a bit of thinking to such a dramatic scenario.

For gone, indeed, is that time in which we used to believe or hope for them to understand one day the meaning of how to counter agony and deception with patience and discretion and how to offer more goodness to goodness instead of bastardization, denial and ill faith. Gone completely is that time in which we used to ponder that we would eventually arrive at something different lurking behind harshness and deception.

What we have come to find, instead, is a new update to much of ignorance, procrastination, insincerity, manipulation and trickery coupled with a demand for us to condone and succumb to them and a surprise from them over our resistance and knowledge of what their hearts plot in secret, what their silence stupidly reveals and what their words pathetically conceal.

There seems to be no use here in elaborating more and I should perhaps finish with this call without adding anything to it further:

"Bring my arms to me

To hone them with the salt of tears.

Bring tears to my eyes

So that the dead among us

Cries over the living."

«Ask him who lives what is life»

Where most people terribly tend to enjoy their emptiness and then horrendously forget the death station, I thus continue to remember. We are mortals and we are all coming to stop by it for a moment. This must be understood. But if you ask me about how I see it, I can submit that I have hardly any fear of crossing such station. I have, instead, fear of my journey in life. I have fear of its painful lessons and tribulations. I do not need to ask anyone about how he/she sees it himself/herself but I need to continue to ask myself, instead, and search for good answers.

My vision, concerning life, has it that life is not what is happening in reality. No, sir! Life is a choice, a stance and an attitude towards life. Life is that of the heart resisting and bleeding because the mind is scoffing at the human breakdown and busy listing the differences between persons and their ideas, if they have any, and then seeking to normalize and turn a blind eye to the lack of innocence, energy and nobility in everything said and done.

I thus continue to remember and ask myself: Are we living life rightly and decently or are we just waiting for it? How is it that we are going to bring back what has been taken away? How are we going to come back home safely and victoriously after a long journey? Finally, while seeking to earn a good life in which good answers to those questions are to obtain, make sure to carefully build, step by step, and with patience and love, a self-guided search for self-improvement and get rid, at the same time, of those who have only big words in their stinky mouths.

In Poetry, Love Remembers and Reminds

Love requires something beyond knowledge. It has always already been a mystery hardly unpacked. As a matter of fact, there is more to it, for the good hearts that continue to beat to it, than just agony, open wounds and tears experienced by many but felt by few and hence expressed, articulated and depicted and sometimes prevaricated, exagerated and twisted by poets, writers and whoever feels himself at it. It all depends on the nature and nurture of the few blessed and cured hearts and minds welcoming and fostering it or the many sullied, corrupt and dirty minds and hearts mistrusting, using and then dismissing it.

In love lies perfect wisdom, healing and eternal happiness for the good hearts that either welcome or shy away but still repsect and in love lies limitations, suffering and homesickness too. In short, to be able to love means to be able to remember clearly and decently. Now, by invoking memory, thus coupled with shared, because it is negotiated, knowledge of the past that must be delivered to the present, we keep at once reading and re-reading, writing and re-writing and building and re-building upon it for posterity. Nobody can start from void because love has always preceded.

Of course, for curious minds, this is easily proven by the existence of numerous collections of poems and huge volumes of prose furthered by critical work to help them endure through time. But it is worth reminding that love cannot be found in books of literature. Literature itself, as Nicholas Watson* rightly said, refers not to books but to the knowledge gained from them.

We can see that in the same way as we see how actions and reactions are being taken and made through time on the ground by those who seek to read, learn and reach out with help (this is love!) and by those who ambition to move many a step further and begin to fly with words and deeds everywhere and offer help on the ground (this is love and knowledge!).

Success will then come to both categories as learning becomes incremental and life-long and this shows us the multitude of possibilties in life and shows us the multiplicity and complexity of ways that either point to the Paradiso where love is nourished and elemented by divine beauty and truth or, alas, to the Inferno where hatred hates everything including itself and thus is ready to suffer, pay the bills of lies and crimes inflicted by its agents and therefore continue to feel the bitterness it has already caused everywhere.

Love, in a nutshell, however mysterious and dangerous, remembers and reminds but hatred, however comfortable, complex and horrendous, forgets, hinders and manipulates.

A Reading and translation of a poem

“The Birth of Song”

I am as certain of my song,

When first it warms my brain,

As woman of her unborn child,

Or wind that carries rain.

The child and rain are born at last,

Though now concealed from sight—

So let my song, unshaped and crude,

Come perfect to the light.

W. H. Davies

- Reading:

The poem is based on an extended metaphor (some form of conceit) involving the notion of (pro)creation: conceiving (brain / womb / wind) and begetting (delivering the poem / delivering the baby / bringing rain). Accordingly, the translation should bring out the elements of this conceit. "Song" simply means "poem". Some poems are set to music; they, then, become songs. The "child" and "rain" are "unshaped and crude" until they are born; likewise, the poem, "unshaped and crude," will "come perfect to the light".

W. H. Davies is known for his being more inclined to simplicity than sophistication, and the gist of this poem attests to it. Child, Rain and Poem all partake of a natural process of growth, according to the poet.

Any translation work must begin by unpacking the meaning before recasting it in a new idiom. In the case of poetry, the expressive function must be approximated as much as possible.

Mohamed Mansouri

- Proposed Translations:

Time for ink to run with blood

Kindly halt O time

Upon the verge of our silence

It is, indeed, worth many a word

Driving home several of points

(Translation mine)

In almost every field of life, many and strange sometimes are the answers worked out and proposed to good and bad questions regarding it and regarding what is beyond it and these answers and these questions certainly keep diverging from one person to another depending on the degree of disposition and state of affairs but the best answers to the worst of questions will always come from those who learn, seek to learn everywhere even in China and then would never feel tired, albeit feeling sometimes hampered and very often short, of learning on a regular day to day and night after night basis including sunny days, rainy days and holidays.

If knowledge is power, then it stands to reason that wisdom is how to invest that power (savoir faire/ the know how) so that it can help the good planning and careful building of bridges between those who know and those who are struggling on their way of obtaining knowledge rather than keep wasting time, money and energy on fruitless tarrying and parrying here and there mostly out of ignorance, egocentricity and xenophobic rejection of the old, the new and the different!

The world in which we are living now is unfortunately turned upside down and the most fortunate and strongest of mice and men in it are on their knees (notice now how honest and articulate they have become in revealing their feelings of fearfulness and cowardice in front of something invisible!) not just because there isn’t enough knowledge (The What) but also because, and here the reason becomes quickly its own consequence, there isn’t enough wisdom (and the how is now turning into how come!) so as to naturally go about profiting humanly from it and most of all safeguarding themselves and others from the dangers involved and which are mostly generated by them willingly or unwillingly.

Knowledge is not always human but wisdom, according to the best of human knowledge, has always been and will continue to be and thus should remain an added value catering for the welfare and sustaining the journey of those who are still human and who are always resisting and insisting on being human and for whom learning is always an important part and an incremental process leading to new questions and fresh answers.

We belong to life!

In these terrifyingly heartbreaking prospects of time, let alone those of place, and despite the actual and futuristic vicissitudes they continue to yield and bring forth, a good opportunity for us to know the truth is now made available. Life is fragile and so are we. This must now be eventually understood. At the same time, it is by no means to be forgotten that since “knowing is not enough we must apply and willing is not enough we must do”(1), it is NOW incumbent upon us to MATURELY WAKE UP and HARKEN TO SAVE OUR LIVES by mending rips or else remain poor victims in the dark and keep watching how death is undoing the majority WHILE nothing is being done against it except some hasty and unwarranted so-called medical care and death postponement. This is again far from being in the service of all as it is seriously said that hospitals across the globe are shutting down. And there is no need to remind of the desolating mediatic comparing and contrasting of statistics about the covid story in the past and present. The future thus becomes more and more terrifying and tethering with what we have just depicted in the very beginning.  By MATURELY WAKING UP I mean becoming aware but also raising awareness about the dramatic scenario being horrendously inflicted on the common of mortals who is you and me rather than either you or me. And poetry, for instance, is a good weapon of life written and to be written by those who are alive for those who are alive. This is what I mean by HARKENING TO SAVE LIVES and struggling to withstand the agents of death; the enemies of humanity. They are so many but they only belong to what they seek to serve: death. We belong to life and we will fight for it and write for it.  (1) Bruce-Lee quote  (a Chinese American martial artist, actor, director, martial arts instructor and philosopher).  Chokri Omri  (Tunisia)
